The most remarkable snorkeling experience I’ve ever had was in Bocas del Toro, Panama.
It was gorgeous!
The quality and variety of brightly colored fish, in the shallows just off the shore, was as impressive as any of my scuba diving experiences.
While swimming along, I hovered a few feet over some coral and a rock, only to find that the rock was actually a rather large octopus. I disturbed her, so she went from a tan, bumpy object I hadn’t noticed at all to a dark, crawling sea celebrity. (Celebrity, because they are by far one of my favorite sea creatures! And the feature of all kinds of cartoons and novels…)
I floated there, watching as the octopus crawled about five feet over the sandy sea floor. And then, I watched as she selected another rock to latch on to, and used her magical powers to disappear into her surroundings. She disappeared so well, that even though I didn’t take my eyes off of her, I questioned if I was still looking at her.
Did I blink for a second too long?
Was that really her?
Or did she put the slip on me and now I’m really looking at a rock?
I was tempted to touch the rock, just to double check, but out of respect for the mighty sea creature, I didn’t want to risk disturbing her again. Going in and out of metamorphized hiding must take some exertion and burn quite a few calories, after all.
So, I continued to hover there, treading water, and wonder if I saw a rock or a camouflaged octopus. That’s just how good her hiding skills were.
Now over to you…
How does this story relate in your world?
What are some things in your life that you know are right there, but the camouflage is so good that you question if it’s really there? I don’t mean other creatures. I mean the intangible things that exist.
When are you surrounded by love, but you question if it’s there?
When are you minutes away from success, but you wonder if really it’s just a flop?
Or when do you wonder if you’re ever going to figure out your life?
It’s not easy sometimes! It can be hard to see just how supported we are. Just how loved and admired we are. Just how talented we are. And just how much the Universe is there to support our dreams and desires.
But you know what? They are there! No matter who you are, what you’ve done, where you live or how you look, I know verifiably that you are supported, you are loved, you are admired, you are talented, and you have a special, unique gift to share with the world.
And how do I know that? I can’t see you right now. I’m looking at nothing more than a computer screen as I write this. But I know, because I have faith in the unseen and the power of humanity. I know in my heart we are all special and can achieve goals greater than we’d ever imagine.
So the next time you think you’ve got nothing or no one on your side but a pile of rocks. Think again. Those rocks are actually invisible support systems – whether you call them angels or joy elves or God or the Universe, or fellow good-hearted people… you are supported.
